Quick Start Helps Tigers Topple Atlanta To Earn Consolation Trophy

Offense has been hard to come by at points this year for the Scotland County Tigers but that was not the case in the first quarter of the consolation final of the North Shelby Tournament January 18. The Tigers opened up with 26 points in the first quarter and survived a four point final period to knock off Atlanta 52-50.

Brad Holt continued to give the team a needed scoring punch on the interior. The senior used his quickness and leaping ability to put up 10 points in the first quarter. The guard trio of Kirk Stott, Chase Moore and Aarron Holt combined for 12 points, and even more impressive, seven assists as the team's ball movement was impressive.

Sophomore Clint Cottrell came off the bench to add four points and grabbed five rebounds during the first quarter onslaught, teaming with Robbie Miller to control the glass.

Despite the hot start for SCR-I Atlanta kept pace and trailed just 26-22 at the end of the first period.

The pace slowed a bit in the second period as the Tigers put up just 12 points but still kept a 38-36 lead. That was in large part to a three pointer by Stott at the buzzer that erased a 36-35 deficit. The senior guard also continued to dish out the assist as he handed out a trio with Logan Bogatzke scoring on two and Aaron Dale getting the other.

The offense dropped another notch in the third quarter but SCR-I still outscored the Hornets 10-9 to lead by three at 48-45 with just eight minutes to play.

Scotland County built a five-point lead after Miller and Brad Holt each hit free throws. After Atlanta rallied to pull ahead 42-41 Moore hit a three pointer to retake the momentum. Aarron Holt hit two free throws and Brad Holt scored in the paint as SCR-I pushed ahead 48-42 with 2:36 to go in the third quarter. That was the last points for Scotland County in the period.

Atlanta opened the fourth quarter with a three pointer to tie it up at 48-48. Neither team could buy a bucket until Stott hit Cottrell with a nice pass for a bucket in the paint to put SCR-I ahead 50-48 with 4:31 to play. Bogatzke got the team going on defense as he swatted a Hornet shot out of bounds. The momentum carried over to the other end where Cottrell hit a jumper to make the lead 52-48 with 3:52 remaining in the contest.

The two teams traded defensive stops before Atlanta finally scored after a five-minute drought to cut the lead to 52-50 with 1:51 on the clock.

The Tigers proceeded to run time off the clock between a series of timeouts that left just 58 seconds to play.

But Atlanta got a pair of chances thanks to missed free throws by the Tigers. SCR-I missed the front end of five one-and-one free throws in the fourth quarter. The defense held with a little help from a big offensive rebound by Bogatzke on a missed free throw with 13 seconds to play as the Tigers held on for the win.

Brad Holt finished the night with 13 points to pace Scotland County. Moore hit for 11 points while Cottrell pitched in with eight. Stott tallied seven points while Aarron Holt finished with five.
