Hot Start Cools Off In Second Half As Rams Rally To Beat SCR-I

An 18-17 advantage and a well played first half quickly disappeared in the third period for the Scotland County Tigers as Schuyler County went on a 10-0 run late in the third period to take charge of the January 10 contest in Memphis.

Aarron Holt opened the night on fire. The senior guard hit three straight three pointers to start the first period. Logan Bogatzke added a pair of buckets inside to put the Tigers on top to finish the first period.

Things slowed down a bit in the second period but the defense kept SCR-I on top. After Kirk Stott scored to open the period, the Tigers went cold for more than three minutes before Clint Cottrell scored inside. That made the score 17-12 with 4:15 left in the first half. The lead went to six points when Robbie Miller made a free throw with 1:29 to play.

Schuyler County finally got going and scored five unanswered points, including a three pointer at the buzzer, to close within one.

The scoring drought continued for Scotland County to start the third quarter as the Tigers went a combined eight minutes with just one point in the second and third quarters. That let the Rams pull ahead 24-18.

Aaron Dale broke the streak when he grabbed a defensive rebound and dribbled coast to coast for the score. Aarron Holt followed that up with a driving score and the Tigers found themselves within two points.

That's when Schuyler County blew the game open with a 10-0 run. Stott gave the team some temporary relief with a three pointer to make the score 34-25 to end the period.

The lead remained at double digits for most of the fourth quarter despite a pair of three pointers from Stott and another from Holt.

SCR-I made a last ditched run with under a minute to play as the defensive pressure caused several Rams turnovers. SCR-I cashed in on the steals with back to back lay-ups from Cottrell and Stott. Cottrell followed that up with a three-point play off a steal by Dale and the deficit was suddenly at just six with 51 seconds to play.

But that was as close as the Tigers could get as Schuyler County hit its free throws in the clutch. Holt hit another three pointer in the final seconds but Schuyler County went on to the 51-44 victory.

The Tiger guards combined for 30 points on the night as Holt finished with 17 and Stott added 13. Sophomore Clint Cottrell contributed seven points in his first varsity action, filling in for the injured Tigers, Chase Moore and Jake Fogle. The loss drops SCR-I to 2-9 on the year.
