Fromm's 40 Points Not Enough As Warsaw Beats Lady Tigers

The girls third place game at the Highland Tournament resembled an old fashioned duel as much as it did a basketball game, as two players made a run at the tournament's scoring record.

Meagan Fromm poured in a career-high 40 points but it was Warsaw's Ashley Brownlee who broke the event's single game scoring record as she surpassed Miranda Lipper's 41, by one point. Ironically enough, Lipper set the record against Scotland County five years ago.

Warsaw rode the record setting performance to a 73-61 victory to claim the third place trophy.

Scotland County opened the game strong as the team dominated the offensive glass while knocking down several long shots. Fromm opened the game with seven straight points, including a three pointer to make the score 7-3. After a free throw from Rebecca Consbrock, Amy Blomme hit the first of two three pointers in the opening period. Fromm closed out the quarter with a driving bucket to give SCR-I a 17-11 lead.

The Lady Tigers continued the bombs away performance to start the second period as Fromm hit her second three pointer to make the score 20-11.

The junior forward continued her onslaught, scoring a pair of free throws before she scored on an offensive rebound to give SCR-I its biggest lead of the night at 24-13.

A bucket by Brandi Mallet maintained the 11-point margin before the Warsaw press began to take its toll. Several consecutive turnovers by the Lady Tigers quickly made the score 26-20. Valerie Crawford stopped the run with a free throw but the momentum stayed with Warsaw as the Wildcats continued the comeback trimming the Scotland County lead to 27-23 before Sara Norton converted a three point play. She followed that up with a score inside but it was not enough to stop the Warsaw charge as the Wildcats eventually took a 35-32 lead at half time.

Brownlee did the bulk of the damage during the rally, as the Warsaw guard simply was quicker than the defense. She scored the bulk of her points by dribbling around her defender and taking the ball to the middle of the lane where she knocked down runner after runner from short range.

SCR-I never recovered from the run and the Lady Tigers continued their season-long struggles in the third period allowing Warsaw to extend the lead to 52-40. Fromm scored twice to open the period and bring the lady Tigers within one point but that was as close as they could get. The team went cold and got just four points, all from the free throw line, in the final five minutes of the quarter.

The Lady Tigers went on the offensive in the final eight minutes, to the tune of 21 points. Unfortunately they could not stop Brownlee and the Wildcats as they matched the 21-point performance.

Fromm quickly moved into contention for the scoring record. After scoring 23 points in the first three quarters, she opened the final period with nine straight points for SCR-I to put her in striking distance with 32.

Still the Lady Tigers could not get the lead below double digits. The teams traded buckets as Jessie Cotton connected on a jumper and Norton scored in the paint. Fromm then closed out with eight points to get to 40. She had a chance to bypass both Lipper and Brownlee but missed a pair of free throws with just seconds left on the clock.

Despite falling short on the single game record, Fromm did eclipse the individual tournament scoring mark of 76 points set in 1979 by Sheri Sills of Clark County. Fromm had 19 points against Knox County in the opener and followed that up with 19 points against Clark County before the 40 point night against Warsaw gave her 78 points for the tournament.

Blomme finished with eight points and Norton added seven to go along with Fromm's 40. The Lady Tigers fall to 5-5 on the year.
