SCR-I Holds Its Own Early Against Top Rated Indians

Going into a game against an undefeated team, and arguably one of the best squads in the state in Class 2A, one might expect a young, inexperienced team like Scotland County to be a little overwhelmed.

That was not the case January 2 when the Tigers took on Clark County in the semi-finals of the Highland Tourney. Apparently no one told SCR-I that it should be intimidated as the Lady Tigers had the audacity to lead the game after the first quarter.

"I have to say that I was pleased with our mental approach heading into the game," Coach Andrea Dabney stated. "Our girls have a lot of confidence. Sara Norton and Jessie Cotton, two new starters this year, feel like they can get the job done against whoever they are going up against on a given night, and we are going to need that down the road."

Unfortunately the term, overwhelmed, came into play in the third period, when the Indians pressure defense turned the game around with a 26-6 run to show that Clark County has earned its top ranking. The Indians cruised on from there for the 65-46 win.

Scotland County jumped out to a 12-8 lead in the first quarter behind the post play of Norton and Brandi Mallett who combined for nine first period points to go along with a three pointer from Meagan Fromm.

Amy Blomme opened up with five points in the second period and Fromm added six but Clark County took the lead 31-27 at the intermission.

The third period was the downfall for SCR-I as Clark County took over the game with a full court press that led to a 57-33 advantage.

"At one point we had six straight turnovers that just totally turned the game around," Dabney said.

SCR-I outplayed the Indians in the final period but the damage had been done.

Fromm finished with 19 points to pace the SCR-I offense. Norton reached double figures with 10 and Blomme and Brenna Cook each finished with five.
