EUGENE NEWLAND
(11/13/1927 - 11/7/2002)



Elmer (Eugene) Newland, 74, of Memphis, MO, was born in Scotland County on November 13, 1927, the son of Elmer Daniel and Grace Myrtle (Bennett) Newland. He passed away on November 7, 2002, at Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO after battling with cancer.

He was raised in Scotland County, MO, where he went to grade school at North Barker and Memphis High School.

On August 5, 1945, he was united in marriage to Helen Arlene Ruggles, who preceded him in death. To this union three children were born, Carol Ann Farrell of Lancaster, MO, Bobby Gene Newland of Lancaster, MO, and Billy Joe Newland of Kirksville, MO.

After their marriage they lived in Memphis, MO. In the fall of 1951 they bought a small farm northwest of Hitt, where they farmed and raised their family. In the 60's they bought her parents' farm and later the Fryrear Place.

Eugene was never idle. He custom baled hay, custom ground feed and custom combined and in slack time he worked at the Poe Implement in Downing, MO.

In 1988 they decided to sell the farm and moved to Memphis, where they enjoyed several years of retirement together. He furthered his interest in woodworking. He and Helen made numerous toys and gifts for their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Eugene was diagnosed with Cancer in early May. He had radiation and chemo treatments for eight weeks. He continued to fight until November 5, 2002, when he decided to give up the struggle and go home to Memphis, MO and then home to be with Helen and the Lord. Eugene and Helen were good Christians attending Barker Church for many years.

Preceding Eugene in death were his wife, Helen; his mother, Grace; his father, Elmer; one sister, Imogene Miller; one granddaughter, Angel Lea Farrell.

Surviving are Eugene's mother-in-law, Mary (Ruggles) Fryrear of Memphis, MO; his children, Carol Ann and husband, John Farrell, their children, Kali Keum and Kylie Keum, Bobby Gene and wife, Sandy Newland and their children, Kristina Marie and husband, Cameron Miller, Amanda Mary and children Destiny Marie and Misty Dawn, Becky Gene and April Dawn, Billy Joe and wife, Cheyrl, and their children, Marie Elizabeth, Emily Angeline, Charles Eugene and John William Newland.

The family has suggested memorials to the Barker Cemetery Association or the First Christian Church of Memphis, MO.

Funeral services were November 10, 2002, at the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO with Bro. Larry Smith officiating. Joe Fulk was organist, and Cheyrl Newland was soloist. Body bearers were Joel Kapfer, Duane McDonald, Glen Lister, John Farrell, Wayne Newman, and Mike Frederick. Interment was in the Barker Cemetery in northwest Scotland County, MO. Payne Funeral Chapel of Memphis, MO, was in charge of arrangements.
