REV. WOODROW J. PHILLIPS
(12/25/1914 - 9/24/2002)

Rev. Woodrow Jackson Phillips was born in Memphis, TN, December 25, 1914, and promoted to heaven September 24, 2002 from DeLand, FL. Woodrow was raised in Milton, IA, where he lettered in five sports during high school. Upon graduation he joined the Marines and eventually served in all five branches of the armed forces.

While in the Coast Guard he served as a lighthouse keeper on Loggerhead Key, Dry Tortugas, FL. During WWII he served in the South Pacific aboard the USS Betelguese, skippering the small landing craft that ferried soldiers ashore during some of the major invasions. After the war he skippered supply ships plying the Aleutian Chain under the auspices of the Army-Air Corps. Later, he skippered an ocean-going tug based out of Greenland that took supplies up to Newfoundland to help build the DEW line.

Woodrow married Rosemary Helen Schenk on October 30, 1938, in Sault Ste. Marie, MI where he was stationed at the time. They have three children: Gretchen Sue (Milton) Tyrrell of Chicago, IL; Wendell Jackson (Grace) Phillips of Sacramento, CA, and Carroll David (Judy) Phillips of Kodiak, AK; seven grandchildren; Susan (Ronald) Whiteford II, Mishawaka, IN; Timothy Phillips Tyrrell, Greenville, SC, Rebecca (Robert) Fletcher, Chicago, IL; Lois (William) Lewis, Chicago, IL; Joel (Jody) Phillips, Virginia Beach, VA; Dale (Carmen) Phillips, Curtea de Arges, Romania; Lynette Marie Phillips, Anchorage, AK, as well as fifteen great-grandchildren.

It was while stationed at Ft. Eustis, VA, that Woodrow and his family were introduced to Jesus Christ as their personal Savior during a revival service at Denbigh Baptist Church, Newport News, VA. Because of this new relationship, they wanted to become active members of a Bible preaching church, and started attending Denbigh Baptist on a regular basis.

Woodrow retired from the military after 22 years service at the age of 40 to attend Miami Bible Institute, Miami, FL. After graduation, Pastor Phillips pastored the Kodiak Bible Chapel, Kodiak, AK, for more than 10 years and also had pastorates at Piaia Church, Haiku, HI; Denbigh Baptist Church, Newport News, VA; Emmanuel Chapel Bible Church, Lebanon, MO and Calvary Bible Chapel, Green Forest, AR. In addition, he assisted at Woodland Acres Bible Camp, Green Forest, AR, as well as acting as interim pastor at Hilltop Bible Church, Clarksville, AR, before moving to the Alliance Retirement Community in DeLand, FL in 1988.

Both of his sons were missionaries, and one also served in the Green Beret in Vietnam. One grandson has been a Navy Seal the last fifteen years while another one is a missionary with Food for the Hungry in Romania.

Woodrow was preceded in death by a brother, Kenneth Nelson Phillips, killed during WWII, and a sister, Esther Mikel. He is survived by another sister, Irene Osburn, Denver, CO, and a brother, Paul (Sarah) Phillips, Lee's Summit, MO, as well as his wife, children, grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at the Alliance Chapel in DeLand, FL, and Woody was given a military burial at the DeLand Memorial Gardens.

As a servant of God he was a humble man and desired to live a holy life, pleasing to God and at peace with his fellow man.

Woodrow loved and served God, his country and his family and he will certainly be missed.
