JESSE CARL "JACK" BROWN

Jesse Carl "Jack" Brown, 86, of Memphis, MO, died September 7, 2002, at his home in Memphis.
The son of Theodore and Edith Marie (Elschlager) Brown, he was born on June 18, 1916, in Downing, MO.
He graduated from Downing High School, class of 1934. Jack served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1942 until 1945. He spent 21 months overseas at the Army Air Force base at Goose Bay, Labrador.
On February 7, 1943, he was united in marriage to Maxine Hall of Downing, MO, by Rev. T.M. Walton at the Christian Church parsonage in Lancaster, MO. To this union three children were born, Lynette, Stephen and Julia. Jack and Maxine shared 59˝ years together.
Jack became a Christian in 1950. He was an active member of the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO, where he served as a deacon, elder and sang in the choir.
After discharge from the Army he worked in Keokuk, IA at Fiber Box. In 1947 he opened Jack's Coffee Shop in Downing, MO. After moving to Memphis he worked as a salesman for Coke for five years. In 1957 Jack became the State Farm Insurance agent serving people in Scotland and Schuyler Counties for over 28 years before retiring in 1985. For over 30 years he walked daily. He was a member of the Memphis V.F.W. Post #4958.
Preceding him in death were his parents and two brothers-in-law.
Surviving are his wife, Maxine of Memphis, MO; his children, Lynette Burroughs and husband, Larry of Blue Springs, MO, Stephen Brown of Raytown, MO, and Julia Rush and husband, John of Baton Rouge, LA; grandchildren, Kent Lancaster and wife, Patti, Angie Brian and husband, Reid, Kim Browning and husband, Kevin, Jacob Rush and wife, Christy, and Jessie Rush and fiancee Dusty Cox; step-grandchildren, Larry Dale Burroughs and wife, Alesia, and Lori Shorten. Also surviving are eight great-grandchildren and two step-great-grandchildren; two sisters, Hazel Grey of Forsyth, MO and Blanche Meyers of Hollister, MO.
He was loved and will be missed by all.
The family has suggested memorials to the Scotland County Health Department or Scotland County Nutrition Center, Inc.
Visitation will be Wednesday, September 11, 2002, at the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO, 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the family receiving friends from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
Funeral services will be Thursday, September 12, 2002, at 1:30 p.m. at the First Christian Church, Memphis, MO with Bro. Jack Sumption officiating. Music will be by Lori and Joe Fulk. Body bearers will be Glen Lister, Fred Clapp, Kenneth Monroe, Brett Brewer, Jim Curry, and Terry Fincher. Honorary bearers will be Hillis Baker, Leo Darr, Bob Shanes, and Roy Lee Smith. Military graveside services will be by the Wallace W. Gillespie V.F.W. Post #4958, Memphis, MO. Interment will be in the Downing Cemetery, Downing, MO. Arrangements by Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
