Martha Elizabeth "Liz" Johnston, 85, of Memphis, MO, formerly of Rutledge, MO, passed away March 19, 2002, at the Scotland County Care Center in Memphis, MO.

Born March 25, 1916, in Bloomfield, IA, she was a daughter of Emil and Mamie Brunk Smallwood.

On December 8, 1940, in Lancaster, MO, she was united in marriage to William Ivan Johnston, who preceded her in death on November 15, 1999.

Surviving are one son, David Johnston and his wife, Marian of Memphis, MO; one sister, Mary Ellen Cashatt of Des Moines, IA; four sisters-in-law, Lucille Hudson of Mt. Pleasant, IA, Dorothy Bettinghouse of Lebanon, MO, Bessie Johnston of Kirksville, MO, and Niomi Chandler and husband, Edd of Hillsday, IL; one brother-in-law, Stanely Johnston and wife, JoAnn of Bremerton, WA; three grandchildren, Chris Johnston and wife, Joyce of Huxley, IA, Arlise Johnston of Overland Park, KS, and Bryan Johnston and wife, Michele of Rutledge, MO; six great-grandchildren, Bailey, Brandi, Whitney, Gail, John and Bradley and several nieces and nephews.

Her parents; husband; three brothers, Charles, Carl and one in infancy; one sister, Madeline Houston; four brothers-in-law, Melvin Johnston, Ervin Johnston, Arlis Johnston, and Melvin Cashatt; two sisters-in-law, Irene Bettkofer and Vernita Johnston preceded her in death.

Mrs. Johnston was a graduate of the Bloomfield High School and the Creston, IA Beauty School. She was a beautician in Ottumwa, IA and then operated a salon from her home after her marriage and moving to Rutledge. She drove a school bus for the Rutledge Grade School. Mrs. Johnston was also a 4-H leader, made crafts which she sent all over the country, made wedding and anniversary cakes and did sewing for a lot of people. She loved flowers and gardening.

Funeral services were held March 22, 2002, at the Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home in Edina, MO. Reverend Norman Snowbarger officiated the service. Burial will be at a later time at the Pauline Cemetery at Rutledge, MO. An expression of sympathy in memory of Mrs. Johnston may be made to the Pauline Cemetery. Hudson-Rimer Funeral Home of Edina, MO was in charge of services.
