DORIS JEAN HOWARD

Doris Jean Howard, 76, of LaBelle, MO, passed away March 11, 2002, at the LaBelle Manor Care Center in LaBelle, MO.
She was born on January 27, 1926, in rural Knox County, MO, the only child of Thomas F. and Ruth Mary Cody White.
Doris attended rural school northeast of Edina, MO, before graduating from St. Joseph High School in Edina, MO. She continued her education by attending business school in Denver, CO.
On August 7, 1953, in Salem, AR, Doris married Robert M. "Bob" Howard and he preceded her in death on May 17, 1984.
She was a member of the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, MO, and the LaBelle American Legion Auxiliary. She and her husband, Bob rode and sold Harley-Davidson Motor-cycles. They were charter members of the Missouri Hawks Motorcycle Club and later the Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club.
Doris enjoyed her work as a bookkeeper, serving in her 40th year with the Lewis County C-1 School District, where she was lovingly known as "Maxine" by her co-workers. She was especially proud that both her daughters were involved in education.
Doris is survived by two daughters, Mary Ruth and her husband, David Couch of Edina, MO, and Peggy and her husband, Dennis Gaines of Shelbyville, MO; three grandchildren, Creighton Gaines, Andrea Tuggle and Emily Gaines, all of Shelbyville, MO; a brother-in-law, Lewis and his wife, Doris Howard of LaBelle, MO and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents and husband.
A funeral mass was held March 14, 2002, at the Queen of Peace Catholic Church in Ewing, MO, with Father David Cox officiating. Burial was in the St. Joseph Cemetery in Edina, MO. Music was provided by Nina Jo McKenzie, organist, and Brent Karhoff, soloist. Pallbearers were E.H. Smith, Dr. Jim Howard, Dr. James Cale, Creighton Gaines, Jim Gibbons and Robert Reed Miller. Honorary bearers were Lewis Howard, Delbert Myers, Jack Gibbons, and Bill TenEyck. An expression of sympathy in memory of Doris Howard may be made to the Lewis County C-1 Art Trek. Coder Funeral Home, LaBelle, MO was in charge of arrangements.
