HELEN ARLENE NEWLAND

Helen Arlene Newland, 74, was born May 12, 1927, to Guy Madison and Mary Adeline (Phillips) Ruggles. She passed away on January 24, 2002 at Boone Hospital Center in Columbia, MO, after a lengthy illness.
She went to grade school at North Barker and high school at Memphis, MO.
On August 5, 1945, she was united in marriage to Elmer Eugene Newland and to this union three children were born, Carol Ann Farrell of Lancaster, MO, Bobby Gene Newland of Lancaster, MO, and Billy Joe Newland of Kirksville, MO.
Helen and Eugene lived in Memphis, MO at Mrs. Teeters for a short time, working in Memphis, MO. In the fall of 1951, Helen and Eugene bought a small farm northwest of Hitt, where they farmed and raised their children. In the 1960's they bought her parents' farm and later bought the John Fryrear farm. In 1988 they decided to sell the farm and move to Memphis, MO, where they enjoyed several years of retirement together.
Helen had a stroke on November 10th and continued to have small strokes until January 24th, when she took Jesus' hand and went home to be with family and friends who preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her father; two brothers; and one sister; also one granddaughter, Angel Lea Farrell.
Surviving are her husband, Eugene, and her mother, Mary Fryrear, both of Memphis, MO; her children, Carol Ann and husband, John Farrell, their children, Kali Keum and Kylie Keum, Bobby Gene and wife, Sandy Newland, and their children, Kristina Marie and husband, Cameron Miller, Amanda Newland and children, Destiny Marie and Misty Dawn, Becky Gene and April Dawn, Billy Joe and wife, Cheyrl Newland, their children, Marie Elizabeth, Emily Angeline, Charles Eugene and John William Newland.
The family has suggested memorials to the First Christian Church.
Funeral services were held January 28, 2002, at the First Christian Church in Memphis, MO with Bro. Jack Sumption officiating. Musicians were Cheyrl Newland, Joe Fulk and Velva Freburg. Body bearers were Cameron Miller, Brian Archer, Samuel B. Archer, Eddy Miller, Larry W. Miller and Terry L. Miller. Interment was in the Barker Cemetery in rural Scotland County, MO. Arrangements were handled by the Payne Funeral Chapel, Memphis, MO.
