FREDERICK GERTH
(10/6/1915 - 1/23/2002)



Frederick Gerth, Jr. of Sarasota, FL, formerly of Memphis, MO, died January 23, 2002, at the Sarasota Memorial Hospital in Sarasota, FL.

He was born the son of Fred and LoDema (Crumly) Gerth on October 6, 1915, in Wyaconda, MO.

He married the former Dixie Dimit in 1941. He married the former Kay Morgan in 1979.

Frederick graduated from the Memphis High School and earned a Bachelor of Science degree and attended one year of graduate school in business administration at the University of Iowa. Frederick also graduated from the St. Louis College of Mortuary Science.

After graduating from mortuary school, he began working in the family business, becoming a licensed funeral director in Missouri and Iowa. In World War II, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and attended Midshipman's School at Northwestern University as a Navigation Instructor. Following advancement to Lieutenant-junior grade, he was sent to North Island for training as a beach master. Upon promotion to Lieutenant-senior grade, he was assigned to the 12th Assault Beach Battalion as the Executive Officer. He served in the European Theater.

When he returned following the war, Frederick developed Triangle Furniture Stores (Memphis, Paris, Shelbina, and Quincy, IL) and IMCO Inc. (Individual Mausoleum Corpor-ation) in Jamesport, MO. For his work in promotion and advertisement for Gerth and Baskett, he was awarded a Merchant of Distinction honor from the Chicago Furniture Mart. Frederick is also honored as a 50-year member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association and the Memphis Masonic Lodge #16 A.F.& A.M.

Upon retirement in 1994, he and Kay spent time traveling and pursuing Frederick's hobby, golf. Yet his mind was never far away from his business. Frederick was still sending in ideas for Gerth Funeral Service ads until the week before his passing.

Frederick will be dearly missed by his family and many friends. He was a special man who lived a very full life.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Albert Clayton Gerth in 1959.

He is survived by his wife, Kay of Sarasota, FL; his son, Fritz and wife, Janet Gerth of Memphis, MO; his two daughters, Cathy and husband, Col. John Schweppe of Burke, VA, and Margaret and David Lisy of Nokomis, FL; step-daughter, Susie and husband, Steve Brody of Arizona; six grandchildren, Kersten Schweppe of Boston, MA, Melissa and husband, Jeff Behrens of Memphis, MO, Andrew Gerth of Kansas City, MO, Andrew Schweppe of Burke, VA, Rachel Gerth of Memphis, MO, and Nathaniel Gerth of Memphis, MO; two step-grandchildren, Doug and wife, Lauren Brody of San Franciso, CA, and Bart and wife, Susan Brody of Des Moines, IA; a step-granddaughter, Melissa and husband, Don Peeler of Omaha, NE, and their daughters, Lauren and Alyson; a nephew, George and wife, JoAnn Gerth of Branson, MO; a niece, Gretchen Arnaiz of Tucson, AZ; two great-nephews and four great-nieces.

Funeral services were held January 27, 2002 in the United Methodist Church in Memphis, MO, with Reverend Carol Blackwell officiating, assisted by Reverend Ernest Deatrick. Music was provided by Joan Goosey, organist, and Schelle Cooley, soloist. Serving as pallbearers were Kersten Schweppe, Andrew Schweppe, Andrew Gerth, Nathaniel Gerth, Doug Brody, Bart Brody, Jeff Behrens, Don Peeler, and Dan McCarney. Honorary bearers were Charles Harris, Chipper Harris, Shorty Dial, Guy Gardine, Tom Myers, Jr., David Myers, Shorty Riney, Elmer Mohr, Clayton Alderton, and Dr. Harlo Donelson. Interment was in the Memphis Cemetery, Memphis, MO. Memorials have been suggested to the Memphis United Methodist Church. Arrangements were handled by Gerth Funeral Service from their Memphis, MO chapel.
