Fair Board To Host Series Of Fundraisers For New Building

Out with the old, in with the new. January 1 marks the start of the new year but the Scotland County Fair Board got a head start on its New Year's Resolution, to have a new and improved entrance to the grandstands at the fair ground.

This project is no mere gateway to the main events. It will house a new kitchen, concession areas, new restrooms, ticket sales and a new junior fan club room just to mention a few of the improvements.

Work began earlier this fall when the old cook shack building was removed. The concrete work has been done for the new building and a portion of the materials for the construction project are now on site.

However the building project is only part of the overall picture of bringing the new facility to fruition. The fair board still needs the assistance of the community to help fund the project.

A special soup supper has been scheduled January 25 at the Memphis V.F.W. as a fundraiser for the project. The cost will be $5 for all you can eat soup and pie.

The event will be open from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and will offer a little unique entertainment to go along with the meal. The fair board is sponsoring a Chili Cook-Off. Entry will be $2 with the winner take all, including bragging rights for the best chili in town. All entrants are asked to bring a one gallon sample of their unique chili recipe, which will be tested by a panel of local "celebrity" judges.

Don't worry, if you're not asked to be a judge you will still have a chance to get your hands on the winning chili as the remnants from the sample gallon will be auctioned off to the highest bidders. (The amount will depend on the number and the girth of the judges).

The fundraiser will also feature a number of raffles and door prizes to be given away.

The fair board also will be kicking off the sale of brick pavers to be used at the facility. Donors will pay $35 for a personalized brick (includes three lines of writing) or $30 each for two or more. These special commemorative bricks will be used to construct a patio walkway to cover the 20-feet entranceway between the new building and the entrance to the grandstands.

For more information or to donate items for the supper, raffle, door prizes or to buy a brick paver, simply contact any fair board member.
