Memphis Mentioned In Book About the Field of Dreams

Is This Heaven? is a newly released book discussing the magic of the Field of Dreams. The film site for the famous baseball movie of the same name, which now serves as a tourist attraction for Dyersville, IA.

Former Memphis resident Terry Rush has participated in various projects at the field. In 1992 Upper Deck baseball cards invited Rush to play baseball one weekend with celebrities from the movie, music and baseball industries. Rush capped that off by delivering a non-denominational sermon on the field - The Sermon on the Mound. Later ESPN presented an hour-long documentary Dreamfield, which included work done by Rush.

The new book, written by Philadelphian Brett H. Mandel, discusses how the cathedral carved in a cornfield has almost become prophetic in healing relationships and drawing families closer.

That was the theme of the movie in which the property owner (Kevin Costner) hears voices telling him that famous line "If you build it, they will come". So he built a baseball field in the middle of his Iowa cornfield to the dismay of his banker and just about everyone else in his community. Yet in the end, Kostner plays baseball with his deceased father, along with the ghosts of a number of historical figures from the national past time who walk in and out of the cornfield to play on the diamond.

Mandel interviewed Rush and refers to his work in the book, including a direct mention of the Memphis community, which can be found on Page 87.

"Whenever I do interviews I often refer to Memphis, Missouri," Rush said. "I am proud of my hometown and if the media leaves it in, I'm happy. I want people to know Memphis is significant and her citizens are terrific."

Rush also pointed another reference to his hometown, noting a photo of the towns 1959 little league team was used in the ESPN documentary Dreamfield.
