Nick Moss Entertains Students With Education In The Blues
Mention the Blues and Memphis in the same breath and everyone assumes you mean Memphis, TN. But on October 18 students at Scotland County R-I were treated to a Blues music performance by Nick Moss and The Flip Tops, a well known band from Chicago, IL.
Nick Moss and The Flip Tops performed a number of Blues numbers for students at Scotland County R-I High School as part of the "Blues In The Schools" program.
The group performed for students and faculty as well as a number of area residents who drifted into the gymnasium to hear the sounds of the "History of the Blues" as presented by the band.
The program was presented in part by the SCAMP music boosters club and the Memphis Community Players as well as through donations from area businesses, including Pepsi-Cola Memphis Bottling, Oak Ridge Motel, Hopkins Lumber, Keiths Cafe, Farm Bureau Insurance, Parker Print & Pray and Gray Sound Effects.
The production came to Memphis via the NEMO Blues Society as part of the "Blues In The Schools" national program to educate America's youth regarding the history of the popular musical style.
The program featured musical pieces ranging from the beginnings of the Blues movement all the way to current works by Moss and his band. The music was so well received, by the close of the program, the open room in the gym had turned into a dance floor with students and faculty dancing to the band's final song of the day.
The Blues have helped Moss travel all around the world as he has toured as part of several famous Blues bands since he was 18 years old. When he was 20, he began touring with the Legendary Blues Band and while in Europe he was elevated to lead guitarist.
Moss returned to the States as part of the band led by Blues legend Jimmy Rogers before finally setting off on his own three years later when he formed his current band, Nick Moss and The Flip Tops.
Moss and his band have released two CDs, both of which have been well received by music critics across the U.S.
The band currently is touring the U.S. and came to Memphis just 48-hours after a performance in Phoenix, AZ. Following the stop at SCR-I, Moss and the Flip Tops gave a performance Friday night in Kirksville before entertaining a packed house in Quincy, IL. Saturday evening.
