NEMO Pheasants Forever Chapter Continuing Local Conservation Efforts

The Northeast Missouri Chapter of Pheasants Forever from Memphis has completed another year of local conservation efforts. Last year the chapter teamed up with both the Scotland and Knox County Soil and Water Conservation Districts and the Missouri Department of Conservation to promote the Continuous CRP program. This was done by hiring two conservation consultants who were to visit one-on-one with the landowners and provide information about the program and to develop some educational materials for distribution to more than 2,000 landowners. This effort resulted in 170 landowner contacts and 20 CCRP contracts, which amounted to about 200 acres of conservation practices on the ground. The chapter later offered participants of the CCRP CP21 (Filter Strips) in Scotland County an extra $25/acre cost-share for establishing switch grass in those strips. This resulted in an additional four landowner sign-ups amounting to 60 acres.

Continuing the annual tradition of offering free food plot seed each year, the chapter distributed 3800 pounds of seed to 78 landowners. Seed distributed included corn, milo and hybrid sunflowers. The chapter also purchased 400 lbs. of switch grass seed and five landowners took advantage of this seed for planting nesting cover.

The Pheasants Forever tree planter was also busy again this year. The planter went out to seven landowners, which resulted in 13,000 seedling trees being planted in three counties.

Youth involvement in conservation again this year was a high priority. The chapter provided more than $1,000 for the following functions; a major sponsor for the regional Envirothon, contributed to the Memphis 4-H chapter Shooting Sports, sponsor of the Memphis FFA Grassland Team to the national event in Oklahoma, and made a contribution toward the Haley Dunn Fund, the teenager from Eddyville, IA who will be on the next US Olympic International Skeet Team.

The chapter will again be holding its fundraising event this year on November 2, 2002, at the VFW hall in Memphis. The chapter hopes to provide a fun-filled evening with games, raffles, and auctions of various wildlife artwork to raise money for next year's conservation efforts.
