Large Primary Turnout Finalizes Ballot For November Election

Scotland County voters turned out August 6 nearly twice as strong as the 24-percent statewide prediction made by the Missouri Secretary of State's office. Scotland County Clerk Betty Lodewegen stated 45 percent of eligible voters in the county participated in the primary election. More than 1400 ballots were cast in Scotland County with the Democratic ticket taking two thirds of that number.

The high number of ballots cast likely had to do with two local races as well as the two state tax propositions.

Former Scotland County prosecuting attorney Kimberly J. Nicoli defeated incumbent Susan Henry on the Democratic ballot. Nicoli, who lost to Henry in 1998, received nearly 75 percent of the vote with 668 votes to Henry's 226.

Nicoli will take office January 1, 2003 as she is now unopposed in the November general election.

Lodewegen took one-step in retaining her county clerk position as she won out in the Republican Primary against challenger Cindy (Varnold) Graber. Lodewegen received 291 votes to Graber's 185. She will now face Democratic challenger Mary L. Morgan who received 556 votes on the Democratic ticket.

Other races on the November ballot will include presiding commissioner. Incumbent Mike Stephenson, a Democrat, and Republican challenger Glen Miller each received solid support on their party's tickets.

Several local candidates ran unopposed in the primary. Associate Circuit Judge Karl DeMarce, Circuit Clerk Anita Watkins, County Collector Kathy Becraft and County Treasurer LaMayra Brown all ran unopposed on the Democratic ballot and will have no opposition in the November general election.

Missouri and United States candidates received different levels of support locally. U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof was the top vote getter on the Republican ballot in Scotland County with 398 votes. Jim Talent, who is challenging Jean Carnahan for her U.S. Senator job received 369 votes and Missouri Senator John Cauthorn earned 363 votes. Brian Munzlinger got 306 votes as the Republican candidate for the First District State Representative position.

Local voters stuck with the state trend, which Republican officials called a mistake, helping Al Hanson, who served a year in prison in Minnesota two decades ago, earn the parties nomination for State Auditor. Hanson, who defeated the party's endorsed candidate Jay L. Kanzler, Jr., got 205 votes to just 99 for Kanzler. Experts attributed the issue to lack of name recognition for both candidates and the fact that Hanson's name appeared first on the ballot.

On the Democratic ticket, First District State Representative Sam Berkowitz earned top billing in his run for the State Senate with 814 votes. Paul Campbell, the Democratic candidate to replace Berkowitz in the General Assembly, earned 771 votes.

Incumbent U.S. Senator Jean Carnahan got 675 votes in Scotland County while challenger Darrel Day earned 181 votes. Don Deichman earned only 586 votes on his way to challenging Hulshof in the November election for the 9th District U.S. Congress seat. Incumbent Claire McCaskill received 621 votes as State Auditor.
