Former Memphis Resident Killed In Crash Near Rolla
A former Memphis resident was killed in a head-on collision in Maries County at 9:45 p.m. July 18. According to the Missouri State Highway Patrol, Robert A. Young, 35, was pronounced dead at 11:01 p.m. at the accident scene by Maries County Coroner David Martin.
Young was northbound in a 2000 Freightliner tractor-trailer unit on Highway 63, nine miles north of Rolla when a southbound 1978 Dodge motorhome crossed the centerline and struck Young's vehicle head on.
The driver of the motorhome, Chad Collins, 27, of West Plains, was seriously injured in the crash. He was transported by helicopter air ambulance to Columbia Medical Center.
Collins was ticketed for Driving While Intoxicated. He has been charged with felony manslaughter as the result of the fatal crash.
The accident was investigated by members of the Highway Patrol's Major Crash Team. The Patrol was assisted at the scene by the Maries County Sheriff's Department, the Vi
chy Fire Department and the Phelps County Ambulance.
