Memphis Community Players To Perform GI Jukebox

Instead of taking a trip out of town this summer, consider taking a trip back in time to the 1940s Stagedoor Canteen the setting for the Memphis Community Players 2002 summer production of GI Jukebox.

The USO style watering hole is the setting for this musical where the Players hope to entertain the crowd with a WWII era music revue just like the ones Hollywood stars performed for service men and women as they put on the uniform and headed off to war.

GI Jukebox, written by Rick Lewis, will showcase 26 musical selections from the WWII era including such popular tunes as "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,", "I'll Be Seeing You,", "Opus One", and "Sentimental Journey." In addition to the music and dancing the musical also features Abbott and Costello's famous "Who's On First?" comedy routine, a Spike Jones number and readings from authentic letters U.S. servicemen sent home during the war to end all wars.

The Memphis Community Players will take to the stage at the Memphis Theatre five straight nights beginning Tuesday, July 30. The final performance will be Saturday, August 3. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $7 and can be purchased at the theatre from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. beginning July 15.
