Relay For Life Tally Up To $23,500 And Rising

Not only did hundreds of people gather on the Memphis square to walk all night long for the local American Cancer Society fundraiser, but they picked the longest night of the year to do it.

The Second Annual Scotland County Relay For Life packed the downtown area with walkers as well as numerous food vendors and entertainment booths on June 21, the Summer Solstice. The event carried on through the night before wrapping up Saturday morning at 6:00 a.m. with breakfast at the fire station courtesy of the Memphis Fire Department.

Organizers expected the event to grow but maintained a conservative goal to match the premiere of the Relay for Life which raised $15,000 in Scotland County in 2001. With additional donations still to be tabulated the 2002 version has already brought in more than $23,500.

"There is still money to be added to the total but right now we have WAY exceeded our goal and we could not be happier," said chairperson Diane Tague. "Not only was the fundraising a huge success but everything went much smoother the entire night. Plus the community stayed with us late into the night and was back out early in the morning to show their support for the walkers."

The donation level went hand in hand with increases across the board in participants, enter-tainment and attendance. The Relay itself grew from just eight teams in 2001 to 14 teams this year. More than 60 local residents with cancer joined in the opening lap of the event for the cancer survivors. Also that night more than 360 luminaries were lit in remembrance or in honor of area residents and family members who have fought the battle with the world's deadliest disease.
