Nixon Urges Scotland County To Fight Phone Fraud

Attorney General Jay Nixon recently encouraged Scotland County residents not already on Missouri's No Call List to sign up if they want to decrease the number of telemarketing calls they receive. According to Nixon, 26 percent of the residential phone lines in the county are registered on the No Call list. Currently more than 975,000 Missouri residential phone lines are on the list. New statewide figures will be released July 1, the one year anniversary of No Call.

"I'm pleased to see that Missourians from all corners of the state are enjoying the privacy and protection that the No Call list provides," Nixon said. "As we approach having one million phone lines on the list, the speculation has begun about where in Missouri that millionth phone line will come from."

An April survey conducted by the AARP showed that 84 percent of Missourians not on the list would like to be registered. The survey found two of the main reasons why consumers were not on the list were that they either did not know about the list or did not know how to register for the list.

Nixon said since the No Call list took effect on July 1, the number of complaints to his consumer protection hotline concerning telemarketing fraud has been cut in half.

"Signing up for the list - which is quick, simple and free - will not only give your family much needed privacy, but will decrease the chances of becoming a victim of telemarketing fraud," Nixon said.

The Attorney General has obtained court orders requiring 70 telemarketers to pay $580,000 to the state for calling Missourians on the No Call list. Nixon credits vigilance by No Call team members in filing complaints against telemarketers making calls, coupled with aggressive enforcement actions taken in the first year of the law to make No Call a success.

Missourians can still register their home telephone numbers on the No Call list by going online at www.moago.org or by calling toll free 1-866 NOCALL1 (1-866-662-2551). Those already on the No Call list may file complaints about telemarketing calls by downloading a complaint form on the web site or by calling the toll-free number.
