Downing Fire Department Preparing For July 4th Fundraiser For New Fire Station

The Downing Firefighters have been busy the past several months with training, fundraisers, and working on a new fire station and community building.

The most recent training that members have received has been Advanced Storm Spotters certification, AED training, and First Responder certification.

Since being certified as First Responders, five members of the fire department have been putting their training to frequent use by assisting the Schuyler and Scotland County Ambulance Districts. The team consists of Tommy Anderson, Junior Arnold, Judy Arnold, Rachael Arnold, and Robert Gallagher. A community member, Brenda Roberts, was also certified as a First Responder to assist on calls.

The next training to be held in June will be with AIR EVAC, which will land their unit in Downing. With the more frequent use of this emergency service, fire departments are required to be prepared on setting up landing zones.

The biggest project that the fire department is currently working on is getting a new fire station/ community building constructed. The land has been purchased and a plan has been designed, so the dirt work has begun in preparation for construction.

In support for costs, the firefighters have held several fundraisers along with receiving donations from other businesses and organizations that have either held fundraisers for the department or have given a cash donation.

The firefighters are currently in the process of "gearing up" for another fundraiser to continue to raise funds for the building project. The plans are for hosting a 4th of July celebration by having a hog roast (free will donation) followed by an ice cream social. The evening will then conclude with a fireworks display put on by the firefighters.

"Watch for advertisements and flyers with all the details," said fireman Rachael Arnold. We hope to see everyone join us at our July 4th celebration."

If you would like to donate towards the July 4th fundraiser or give a direct donation to the building fund, your donation can be sent to the fire department at: Downing Community Fire Assn., Attn. Rachael Arnold, PO Box 56, Downing, MO 63536.
