University Extension Week Being Celebrated May 19-25

Scotland County Commissioners Roger Riebel, Mike Stephenson and Dean Childress sign a proclamation for Dan Remley declaring May 19-25 Extension and Outreach Week.

This week, May 19-25, is University Outreach and Extension (U.O.E.) Week. The purpose of this week is to make citizens aware of all of the programs and services that Extension has to offer in Scotland County.

UOE serves Scotland County and the state of Missouri by extending the research-based knowledge and problem solving resources of the University of Missouri and Lincoln University to improve people's lives throughout the county and state. Extension has specialists and programs that deal with topics such as: budgeting, workforce preparedness, computer skills, investment, gardening (Master Gardeners), livestock and agriculture, and health. Programs that work primarily with youth include 4-H and the Family Nutrition Education Program (FNEP).

UOE has been a key partner in Scotland County community development efforts such as Power of Youth and Tiger Trail Team. Community events such as Farm City Fest and Memphis Dairy Day are also administered by UOE. Clubs from 4-H and the Fabius Master Gardeners and are involved with community service projects as well.

There are Extension offices in every county in Northeast Missouri, each with different specialists.

"I am a Nutrition Specialist," said Scotland County Extension Director Dan Remley. "We commonly work together to give people of this area several different resources. For example, Jennifer Barnes in Kirksville can provide assistance in horticulture and Joe Keonen in Unionville can provide assistance with farm management. Our regional staff provides this assistance free of charge."

A number of special activities have been planned to celebrate University Outreach and Extension Week.

"Please keep an eye out for blue ribbons located in area businesses this week," Remley said. "If you see any, take it and bring it to our office on the second floor of the Scotland County Courthouse for some gifts donated by local merchants and Memphis Bucks donated by the Scotland County Business and Professional Association. Listen to KMEM for clues about where these ribbons are located. Of course we also encourage you to just drop in at our offices and see what all UOE can do for you!"
