Firstar Unveiling Name Change To U.S. Bank

Most people are probably just now getting used to saying Firstar instead of Mercantile Bank, but that all changed February 21 when the bank chain unveiled it's new red, white and blue U.S. Bank signs.

Roughly a year after the Milwaukee based Firstar purchased U.S. Bancorp, the organization will adopt the latter's name, renaming the corporation U.S. Bank. The name change had been a part of the basic merger agreement between the two banks that was finalized February 27, 2001.

The name change was unveiled with the new U.S. Bank signs at the company's 30 branch offices in northeast Missouri. However, the change will have little real impact on the bank's customers outside of the facilities new signs.

"While the U.S. Bank name and our red, white and blue colors may be new to our markets, people will quickly recognize our continued commitment to our customers and support of the communities we serve," stated James Sappington, Memphis Branch President. "Also, one of our most valuable assets will not be changing - our people. The same team of outstanding financial services professionals who helped customers as Firstar Bankers will now help customers as U.S. Bankers. Our customers are important to us and they know they can still bank with us when they want, where they want and on their own terms as U.S. Bank Customers."

The bank's "Five-Star Service Guarantee", a guarantee to customers of certain key banking benefits backed by financial compensation from the bank for any inconvenience caused by a lack of these services, will remain in place at U.S. Bank.

"Our customers will get the same great service they've come to expect from us," Sappington stated.

According to bank representatives the change will not effect the bank's operations or services offered nor will it require that customers have new checks printed. Patrons with Firstar checks may still use them as account numbers, customer relations and products and services of the former Firstar Bank will remain the same.

Customers will begin receiving new ATM, debit, check and credit cards which will replace the green Firstar look with the new red, white and blue image of the new U.S. Bank.

All account numbers and Personal Identification Numbers (PIN) for these cards will remain unchanged.

In addition to the Memphis branch of the bank, Firstar also owns banks in Macon, Marceline, Hannibal, Shelbina, Trenton, Salisbury and two in Kirksville.

Firstar purchased Mercantile back in 1999. Following that merger the corporation then bought U.S. Bancorp just over a year later, making the newly formed banking organization the eighth largest of its kind in the nation.

U.S. Bank is a subsidiary of U.S. Bancorp. With assets in excess of $171 billion, U.S. Bancorp is the eighth largest financial services holding company in the U.S. The company operates 2,147 banking offices and nearly 5,000 ATMs nationwide.
