Scotland County Fire Department Called Into Service 38 Times In 2001

The 2001 recording year for the Scotland County Fire Department went in spurts and was relatively slow at times as far as fires but the department was kept busy with an increase in rescue calls.

Fire Chief Mark Drummond presented the statistical report for the year at the annual meeting of the Scotland County Fire Corporation held at the Memphis Fire Station January 12.

Drummond told the governing board for the rural fire department that the volunteer department responded to a total of 25 fire calls in 2001. There were five structure fires in the county as well as six machinery or motor vehicle fires. The department also doused 14 grass fires during the season.

While the fire department averaged just over two fire calls a month, the firemen added to their response numbers with 13 rescue calls. Nine of those incidents were 10-50 traffic accidents with five of those vehicle crashes requiring the firemen to perform extrication work to allow the victims to be removed from the vehicles, once again lending serious support to the corporations past purchase of the Jaws of Life equipment.

The remaining four rescue calls involved a tractor rollover, the bomb threat at the schools, a search for a missing person as well as the extrication of a pedestrian that had fallen from a bridge.

April proved to be the busiest month of the year with nine total calls. April 7 played a big part of that total as the department responded to four separate grass fires in one afternoon. February also proved busy for the fire department with six calls that month.

In other business at the meeting, the board replaced three retiring members and elected new officers.

President Norris Gaffney informed the board that he would be stepping down due to the sale of his property in the county. Gaffney said he could not continue to serve the corporation as he no longer owned any rural property and thus no longer had a membership in the fire protection service.

In addition to Gaffney's resignation the board also lost the services of Hillis Baker and Gene Durham. All three men had served as board members for 40 plus years since the fire protection corporation's inception in 1961.

The board elected Freddie Henderson to replace Gaffney as the organization's president. Willis Martin was elected the vice-president. The board also approved three new members, Mike Johnson, Wayne Durham and Bob Hunolt, to replace the retiring members. Stacie Dannenhauer was re-elected as the group's secretary and treasurer.

Other current members of the board are Chad Triplett, Rudy Glass, Bud Garrett, Tom Fender, Wilbert Lohmann, George Frederick and Jack Dannenhauer.

The Scotland County Fire Corporation offers fire protection services to rural residents of Scotland County. The organization is funded solely by annual membership dues of $25, which are paid by landowners each January. The membership dues are delinquent beginning March 1.
