Lady Tigers Finish Strong To Knock Off Marceline
For the fourth consecutive game the Scotland County girls varsity basketball team had a strong start as the Lady Tigers opened up the November 30 game against Marceline with an 18-4 run in the first quarter. But for the first time all year SCR-I also finished strong as the team picked up its first win, knocking off the Tigers 41-25 with a good fourth quarter.
The opening eight minutes were all Scotland County as the team used full court pressure to run the first period at fast break speed. Sara Norton started the scoring with a free throw.
Meagan Fromm then got things going on both ends of the court. She scored a bucket in the paint and followed that up with a three pointer from the wing to make the score 7-0.
On the defensive end the junior picked up three blocked shots in the opening minutes. The last one led to an easy score as she grabbed the loose ball and hit Norton down court for the lay up.
Brenna Cook hit a jumper from the wing to make the score 10-2 and force a Marceline time out. The Lady Tigers shooting began to cool off a bit but Fromm took care of the scoring as she scored three consecutive baskets on offensive rebounds off missed shots by her teammates.
She capped off the excellent start grabbing a defensive rebound and taking the ball coast-to-coast to score a driving hoop as time expired on the first period with SCR-I on top 18-4.
If the shooting was cooling off in the first period, it basically froze solid in the second period. Amy Blomme made a steal and scored a lay up early in the second period and that was the lone score for the Lady Tigers in the period.
The defense kept up the pressure and limited Marceline to just seven points in the quarter to maintain a 20-11 lead at half time.
The advantage kept shrinking in the third period as Marceline continued to cut into the lead. Fromm hit a free throw before Norton scored in the paint to make the score 23-12. Cook scored on a driving move to make the score 25-14 with 3:23 left in the period. But SCR-I went scoreless the rest of the period allowing Marceline to come within six points at 25-19.
That was as close as SCR-I would allow the Tigers to get. Fromm nailed a jumper to start the fourth period and to break the ice on the scoring. Norton followed that up with a bucket inside to push the lead to 10 points. Fromm sandwiched a basket by Valerie Crawford with a pair of scores and the Lady Tigers took charge with a 37-20 lead just four minutes into the fourth quarter. Norton finished up the game with a pair of scores and Fromm added two free throws to make the final score 41-25.
Fromm scored 21 of her game-high 22 points in the first and fourth quarters. Norton became the first Lady Tiger besides Fromm to break double digits in scoring as she put up a career-high 11 points on the night. Cook finished with four points and Blomme and Crawford each had two points.
The Lady Tigers improved to 1-3 on the season.
