Knox County Knocks Off Lady Tigers In Tourney Finale

The Scotland County varsity softball team cruised through the first two rounds of the Schuyler County Tournament before the wheels came off the ride in the championship game.

SCR-I defeated Brashear in the tourney opener 2-1 in extra innings. The Lady Tigers had to come from behind to tie the game at 1-1 in the sixth inning. Meagan Fromm singled and stole second base. She moved into scoring position on a single by Sara Eggleston and came in to score on a sacrifice bunt by Brandi Mallett.

The Lady Tigers won the contest in the bottom of the eighth inning. The tie-breaker rules were used, meaning both teams started the extra inning with a runner on second base. Amy Blomme was the base runner. She went to third on a bunt single by Jessie Cotton. Fromm delivered the game winning RBI to cap off a three for four day at the plate.

Eggleston limited Brashear to just two hits. She also allowed a pair of walks while striking out six over eight innings of work.

The one Brashear run came in the fifth inning courtesy of a hit and a pair of SCR-I errors. Blomme ended the threat when she snared a line drive at second base and completed the unassisted double play.

The offense came to life early in game two, as Scotland County jumped on the host team for five runs in the first three innings and held on for a 5-3 win.

Blomme led off the game with a single. She stole second base and went to third on a ground out by Cotton. A deep fly out to centerfield by Fromm plated the first run. A pair of Schuyler County errors allowed the second run to score as Eggleston reached on an error and came around to score when Mallett reached on an error.

Two more runs were plated in the second frame. Valerie Crawford started the inning with a single. Andrea Kirkpatrick followed with a base knock. Both runners moved into scoring position on a ground out by Rebecca Consbrock before Blomme delivered a two-run single to make the score 4-1.

Schuyler cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third inning before SCR-I restored the two-run margin. Brenna Cook hit her first home run of the season to make the score 5-2.

The Lady Rams scored once more in the fourth inning before the bats went silent for both squads and SCR-I held on for the 5-3 win.

Eggleston picked up the pitching win, going the distance while allowing just four hits. She walked two while striking out seven. Only one of the three Schuyler County runs was earned.

The Lady Tigers bats went silent in the finale as Kelly McMahan continued her mastery of SCR-I with her second shutout against Scotland County this year.

The two teams locked in a pitchers duel until the fourth inning when Knox County broke through for a pair of runs despite managing just one hit. SCR-I aided the cause with three errors in the frame.

After a perfect fifth inning things really unraveled for SCR-I in the sixth inning when Knox County sent nine batters to the plate and turned a close 2-0 ball game into a 7-0 blowout.

But the Lady Eagles were not finished as they added four more runs in the seventh frame.

Eggleston held Knox County to just three hits and a walk through the first five innings. But as she entered her 21st inning of the day, Knox County finally got to her in the sixth inning with three hits and a walk. That continued into the seventh with three straight hits forcing SCR-I to the bullpen. Consbrock finished out the game, allowing the final two Knox County runs on three hits and two walks in an inning of work.

The top three hitters in the lineup went a combined four for nine but SCR-I was only able to get one hit in 15 at bats from the four through nine slots in the batting order. Fromm went two for three while Cotton and Blomme each had a hit. Cook contributed the other single for SCR-I.
