Tigers Junior High Football Team Topples Wildcats
The Scotland County Junior High football team evened its record to 1-1 on the season by defeating the Milan Wildcats 24-16 on September 20 in Milan.
The Tigers jumped on the score board on the team's first possession when B.J. Houghton scored on a 10-yard TD run. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the Tigers on top 6-0.
Milan came roaring back, taking an 8-6 lead with a long drive on the Wildcats first possession.
SCR-I stole the momentum right back as Daniel White took the ensuing kickoff and returned it 80 yards for the touchdown. The two-point conversion was no good, leaving the Tigers ahead 12-8.
SCR-I took advantage of a Milan turnover to add to the lead. A bad snap on a Milan punt attempt gave the Tigers the ball in good scoring position. Matt Wickert followed the lead block of Jeff Long up the middle on the way to a 10-yard touchdown run to give Scotland County an 18-8 half time lead.
The Tigers dominated the line of scrimmage in the second half. Milan could not get any momentum going. It didn't hurt when Houghton broke the second play of the half for nearly 70-yards to set up another score. Jeremy Hinds took the handoff from quarterback Marcus Shalley and went 15 yards for the touchdown to put the Tigers on top 24-8.
Milan tacked on a touchdown late in the fourth quarter but it was academic as the Tigers posted their first win of the year. SCR-I's Chris Holt ended another Wildcats drive with an interception.
"We picked up our play a notch this week," said coach Brent Bondurant. "The kids did a much better job of blocking. We were opening holes that were not there last week. Defensively we must work hard on our tackling. We let them have more than they should have."
The Tigers travel to Schuyler County September 27 to take on the Rams. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
