Clark County Spoils Junior High Football Opener
Four unanswered scores late in the contest proved too much for the Scotland County junior high football team to overcome as the Tigers dropped the season opener to Clark County 40-20.
SCR-I jumped out to the early lead when quarterback Jeremy Hinds hit Lathan Watson for a 15-yard touchdown pass.
The Indians struck back quickly with a pair of scores to pull ahead 14-6.
The Tigers tied the game when B.J. Houghton broke loose around the left tackle and rumbled for a 55-yard touchdown run. Marcus Shalley scored on the reverse to make the two-point conversion and tie the game at 14-14 midway through the second quarter.
That was as close as it came for SCR-I as Clark County reeled off four straight scores. The Indians put the ball in the end zone just before half time to take a 22-14 lead to the locker room. Clark County then tacked on three straight scores to open the second half.
Daniel White cut into the deficit when he took the pitch on a sweep around the left end and did not stop until he made it to the end zone for the 45-yard TD.
"Poor tackling and inconsistent blocking on the offensive line really hurt us," said coach Brent Bondurant. "These two aspects of the game are very important to be successful in football. However, both can be corrected with practice."
The JHS Tigers travel to Milan Thursday, September 20 to take on the Wildcats. Game time is 6:00 p.m.
