Memphis Teams Win Benefit Golf Tourney At Edina
Championship Flights in this year's annual Cancer Benefit Golf Tourney held at Edina Country Club were both won by teams from Memphis. They have been faithful in their support. Rep. Sam Berkowitz, Dave Seppelt, Brent Bondurant and Larry Hurley won top place in the men's play while Janet Bolick, Keri Hinds, Mary Young and Denise Watson won the ladies' top division. Second place in Men's Championship Flight was won by J.C. Jones, Harold Foreman, Darrell Simmons and Gerald Foreman; and ladies placing second were Fran Mauck, Sherry Mauck, Angie Miller and Tammy Stauffer.
The annual fundraising tournament was held August 19 at the Edina Country Club as part of the American Cancer Society's Golf Championship with winners eligible to participate in state playoffs at the Lake of the Ozarks. Winners from there advance to a national playoff. All are team events with a four-man or four-lady scramble format.
Although it was a beautiful cool sunny day for the play, fewer teams participated in this year's local benefit. Sixteen teams registered for the men's tournament but only nine teams competed in the ladies' play, making a total of 100 golfers.
There were ties in both "A" Flight divisions - Brad Dixon, Doug Perrigo, John Eise and Mike Mathis won the scorecard playoff with Scott Childress, Dick Kelly, Harley Hamlin and Keith Hamlin. Breaking the ladies' tie were Dottie Kriegshauser, Margie DeRosear, Sarah Spaulding and Lila Hilgeford over Carol Gross, Barb Hagerla, Twila See and Janet Kelly.
John Eise of Maryland Heights, had the only chip-in reported during the tournament play and won the $50 savings bond donated by Harrison Insurance Agency.
Ladies' "B" Flight winners were Mary Kriegshauser, Mary Cahalan, Susan Kriegshauser and Jessica Beckman. Men's "B" Flight was taken by Jim Gibbons, Alan Morgret, Terry Shumate and Roger Riebel.
Teams winning Low Putts prizes were Dixon, Perrigo, Eise and Mathis; Mauck, Mauck, Stauffer and Miller; and DeRosear, Spaulding, Kriegshauser and Hilgeford.
Larry Barnes won the special drawing for a $300 gift certificate at Drennan Pro Shop, which was donated by Citizen's Bank of Edina. Curt Snow won the Tom Watson autographed wedge donated by Assured Management Company and Roger Gipson won the autographed Tom Watson book, while Larry Hayes won their Lee Trevino autographed golf cap. Stacie Miller won the Stan Musial autographed photo which was donated by Rep. Sam Berkowitz.
