Scotland County Raceway Finally Prevails Over Mother Nature
Mother Nature finally gave a green flag to the Scotland County Raceway but yellow was the predominant color of the night as not one of the six feature events made it through without a caution.
After three straight rain outs at the track, SCR drew a large field of cars after word got out that the Saturday evening event would be held despite wet conditions and the threat of more rain.
The hobby stock and A-modified divisions each featured 20 cars while the B-modifieds and the cruisers were just one short of that total with 19. The late models and stock car events each fielded just 10 cars.
The show opened with the late model class taking the field. Denny Woodworth of Mendon, IL, in the #45DW car must have felt like he was on a deserted island after the first few laps. He jumped out to a huge lead and coasted to an easy victory in the 25-lap event. Jody Woods of Donnellson, IA, in the #51 car had a similar run in second place. The true battle was for third with Nick Ingalls finally pulling past the #97 car of Jerry Asher and Richard Westhoff in the #3W all the way from his rear starting position.
Woodworth and Westhoff picked up the wins in the heat races.
Next on the agenda was the hobby stock feature. This full field set the tone for the rest of the evening. The field was restarted four times due to cautions in turns one and two.
Tony Becerra of Carthage, IL held the early lead in the #2 car from his front row starting position. He held a comfortable advantage while Rodger Dresden of Keokuk, IA in the #1 car and #43s Jeff Soper of Kahoka duked it out for second place. Dresden finally made his move on turn two, going high around Soper and taking second.
It was short lived as the sixth yellow flag of the night flew after a crash in turn four, forcing the restart and sending Dresden back to third place.
But with the top trio bunched together for the restart the group gave the crowd a show as they went three wide in turn two. Dresden quickly moved past Soper into second place as he rode the groove in the first two corners to his advantage.
That strategy changed on the final lap as he went low in the first turns and caught Becerra off guard, slipping underneath to take the lead and go on to the checkered flag. Becerra finished second followed by Soper in third. John Oliver, Jr. drove the #5 car to fourth place with Jim Walker of Mystic, IA, piloting the #80 car to fifth place.
The B-modified class tried to one-up the hobby stocks, at least as far as the yellow flags were concerned. By the time the checkered flag flew there were nearly as many cars in the infield (nine) as there were on the track (10).
The action was fast paced early on as the #61 car of Kevin Embree held the lead from his front row starting position. Chris Larson of Keokuk, IA moved his #67 car up to become the main challenger. The duo went bumper to bumper, literally, for several laps, before the two got together going into turn one, allowing Larson to move in front. The two cars seemed to be stuck together as they rubbed all the way around turn two and half way down the back stretch.
The lead change didn't make it around one lap as a spin out in the final turn brought out the caution flag. That proved to be a sign of things to come.
The second caution flag came out when the #2R car of Memphis driver Jerry Reese got taken out in turn two sending two cars to the infield.
Kelly Smith was the next victim of the yellow as Mike Hill's #1 car slid out of the low groove in turn two and collided with Smith's #41 car, sending both to the infield.
All that time Embree was battling to hold off Larson as Jerry Poor moved up the pack into third place in the #86 car.
The extended race period came back to haunt Embree as he appeared to come down with car troubles, dropping him off the pace quickly in the final few laps and ultimately sending him to the infield. That allowed Larson to take the checkered flag followed by Poor and David Miller of Mexico in the #8 car. Danny Daggs of Donnellson, IA finished fourth in the #04 car while the #28 car of Chuck Ancel of Mendon, IL, took fifth place.
Heat wins went to Miller, Larson and Jeff Eddy of Milan.
The stock car race went a bit smoother but did not lack for racing action, as there was plenty of bumping and jostling for position in the 10-car field. The #7s car of Wade Francis took to the lead early. Harley Hill of Wayland was moving up to make a challenge before he broke a tie rod and was forced out of the contest. It looked like smooth sailing for Francis but he blew the engine with just two laps to go allowing Mark Smyser to take the lead in the #69 car. He held off a hard charging #77 car of Jim Lynch of Bloomfield, IA, for the win.
The heat races were won by Smyser and Francis.
The A modified feature looked to be a battle between the #13 car of Jim Roach from Kahoka and the #FR15 car of Tim Folkerts of Albia, IA. The two were jockeying for position from the drop of the green flag. Mark Burgtorf had the #69 car at the front of the pack as well, as he and Tony Fraise battled for third position.
Burgtorf found the lead dropped into his lap when Folkerts got into the rear of the #13 car of Roach and spun him out. The two cars were sent to the back of the pack on the restart.
That proved to be all Burgtorf needed as his car held off all the challengers. The #72 car of Curtis Boyer held second position for much of the race until engine troubles caused it to fall off the pace. Troy Folkerts moved the #FR17 car into second while his brother and Jim Roach steadily picked off cars at the end of the pack moving back towards contention. John Fuller and Justin Fuller were battling for fifth position just ahead of the hard charging cars of Roach and Folkerts.
With one lap to go Jardin Fuller spun out in turn three, forcing a restart and extending the race two additional laps.
Burgtorf has able to hold off the charge from the #16 car of Mike Delozier of Carthage, IL, to win the contest. Delozier finished second ahead of Troy Folkerts in the #FR17 car. Boyer was fourth followed by Tim Folkerts.
The heat races were won by Tim Folkerts, Troy Folkerts and Burgtorf.
The #34H Camaro once again proved to be the class of the cruiser division as the Hudson squad once again rode to victory lane, this time claiming the top prize of $500 on Pepsi-Cola Bottling Company's Cruiser Craziness night at SCR.
The Hudsons moved up from a third row starting position early in the race and were able to hold off challenges from the #32 car of Jeff and Herb Delonjay as well as the #29 car of Ryan Stober and John Shelton. They finished second and third respectively in the race.
Tanya Wietholder and Angie Sapp won the first heat race in the #05 car. Jeff Delonjay and Herb Moore won heat #2 while final qualifying race was won by Stober and Shelton.
