Buford Chosen To Attend Missouri Fine Arts Academy
Jennifer Buford, a sophomore at Scotland County R-I High School, recently learned she had been selected to attend the Missouri Fine Arts Academy this summer.
The special event will be held from June 17 through July 7 on the campus of Southwest Missouri State University in Springfield.
Buford was chosen by the selection committee to be among the approximately 220 students from across Missouri to receive the honor.
The program is a three-week residential seminar for the top 250 of Missouri's art students that will be entering their junior or senior year in high school. The program is targeted to help artistically gifted students achieve their full potential and motivate them to use their abilities in attaining higher goals.
All public school districts in the state are eligible to nominate at least one student for the honor. The application must include examples of the student's artwork. The application is reviewed by a panel established by DESE.
The Fine Arts Academy is administered by the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education in cooperation with the university. It is made possible through funds provided by the Missouri General Assembly and was established to provide enrichment opportunities that may differ significantly from those provided in the more traditional high school programs.
Jennifer is the daughter of Don and Twila Buford of Memphis.
