Memphis Rocked By 2nd Suicide In Recent Months
A Memphis man died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at an undisclosed location northwest of Memphis just after 3:00 p.m. Sunday, December 2.
According to the Scotland County Sheriff's Department, Kevin J. Sample, 37, took his own life. A family member went to the sheriff's office to report the incident. Officers responded to the rural scene and found Sample's body. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Scotland County Coroner, Ginny Monroe.
This marked the second suicide in the community over the past several months and localizes a problem that strikes nationwide. More people die from suicide than from homicide in the United States. Every day approximately 86 Americans commit suicide, and 1,500 people attempt to commit suicide.
These numbers tend to go up during the holidays so it is important for all individuals to realize that help is available. Call 1-800-SUICIDE or a local crisis center to talk to a counselor if you feel suicidal or try to express your feelings to trusted friends or relatives.
