Congressman Kenny Hulshof Secures Food Bank Funding
U.S. Congressman Kenny Hulshof (R-MO) recently announced that he has secured $340,000 dollars in federal funds for the Central Missouri Food Bank. The funds are contained in the conference report for the FY 2002 Veteran's Affairs/Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill. The money will help the CMFB acquire a 38,500-square-foot warehouse and build a 10,000-square-foot cold storage facility.
"Every year thousands of Missourians get their daily meals and nutrition through the Central Missouri Food Bank. It's a heart-breaking reality that that need exists today in Missouri. Thankfully the CMFB has been helping low-income Missourians for years and now it's time to help the Food Bank in its time of need. The government can provide a hand up, not a hand out, by supporting this hard-working organization that will continue to serve Missourians in times of crisis or economic hardships. These folks are passionate about feeding people--a basic human need that cannot be overlooked," said Hulshof.
Every month millions of pounds of food are donated to the CMFB. Annually, the food bank distributes ten million pounds of food, free of charge to 116 charitable programs in 31 counties in central and Northeast Missouri. Due to infrastructure limitations, the Food Bank has been forced to turn away more than two million pounds of food each year, which results in only half the in-need population being served. The new warehouse and cold storage facility will solve that problem.
"It's not just business as usual any more for hunger relief agencies. With the slowing economy we're seeing more and more Missouri residents in need of our services. Congressman Hulshof has been proactive in making sure that the Food Bank will be ready to respond to any emergency that happens not only in Mid-Missouri, but in the entire state," said Peggy Kirkpatrick, the Central Missouri Food Bank Executive Director.
The Central Missouri Food Bank was established in 1981 and feeds an average of 40,000 thousand Missourians per month.
