VFW To Host 55th Annual Memorial Day Observance
Freedom is something most take for granted when actually it was a gift provided to us over the years courtesy of the hard work of our nation's armed forces.
Citizens of Scotland County will join together Monday, May 28 at 10:00 a.m. on the lawn of the courthouse for the 55th Annual Memorial Day Services presented by the Wallace W. Gillespie Memorial Post 4958 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
V.F.W. Post Commander Lew Prather will open the ceremony. Program Chairman James Clair will also take the podium prior to Charles Harris who will lead the crowd in a recital of the Pledge of Allegiance.
Rev. Bob Payne of the Scotland County Larger Parish, United Methodist Church, will give the invocation.
Members of the Scotland County R-I Band under the direction of Chris Yarbrough will perform a musical selection before the officers of the V.F.W. place a wreath on the memorial on the courthouse lawn.
The Memphis Community Players will continue the patriotic theme with a number of musical selections to be followed by the SCR-I band's performance of the "Star Spangled Banner".
Associate Circuit Judge Karl DeMarce will have the honor of introducing this year's featured speaker, First District State Representative Sam Berkowitz.
Guy Gardine will continue the time honored tradition with his performance of "Sleep Soldier Boy" with Ann Luther accompanying on the piano.
Rev. Iris Kerr of the Presbyterian Church of Kahoka, will perform the benediction to be followed by the firing squad from the V.F.W. members. C.J. Brose will play TAPS with Justin Keesey providing the Echo.
If weather prevents the holding of the outdoor service, the ceremony will be moved to the VFW post home.
