Outdoor Corner

by Chris Feeney

I don't think I spend more time outdoors in one week that I do during the seven-plus days of the Scotland County Fair so I thought this was a fitting place to write about one of the best fairs I have ever been to.

The grandstand events may have set a record with virtually every night drawing larger than expected crowds. The big show schedule got off to a slow start when a storm forced the cancellation of the tractor pull. The fair more than made up for that the following night as race fans celebrated the Fourth of July in style with a near capacity crowd. The fans were treated to a full card of racing action as the five classes all had larger than normal fields of cars with the A-modifieds taking the prize for biggest class with 22 cars. Topping off the night was an outstanding fireworks display presented by the fair board. It created nearly as many ooo's and awww's from the crowd as the exciting night of racing.

Thursday night's sprint car races brought another large crowd to the fairgrounds. A field of more than 20 cars put on quite a show and got the crowd out in plenty of time to enjoy the midway. Speaking of the midway, the first year for the American Beauty Shows carnival and one must say it was a vast improvement. Coupled together with the enormous Saturday afternoon kids' day program meant there was plenty to do for the young ones.

The outdoor entertainment carried over into the weekend as the grandstands once again took on a load as a full crowd attended the demolition derby Saturday night. The crash-up derby is always a fan favorite and the 24 drivers this year continued the tradition of hard hitting that is sure to bring back yet another capacity crowd next year.

That was not the only big event Saturday as the crowds gathered on the south end of the fairgrounds for the first round of the mud volleyball tournament. Sixteen teams braved the muck and did battle in the double elimination event. The fun in the mud carried over to Sunday afternoon for the finals.

Finally on Sunday night the lights dimmed, the cook shack shut down the fryers and everyone went home. If you noticed the stiff breeze Sunday night before dark I think it was the sigh of relief from the fair board members and the numerous volunteers that helped make this year's fair a giant success. I know I say this every year but it needs to be said. People, please take just a second to thank the fair board members the next time you see them. Remember that these folks basically give away a week of their summer (it's actually a whole lot more than that but I'm talking about the non-stop week of the fair) so that we can have a fair. So say thanks to Ryan Clark, Tammie Dale, Mark Drummond, Jim Fuller, Rob Monroe, Carl Trueblood, Dana Hauk, Bill McBee, Lorie Arnold, Robert Arnold, Tammy Adams, Phil Aylward, Jimmie Winn, David Jackson and Dorene Winn as well as their families and everyone else who helped out.

Of course there may not be any reason for me to write this as I'm pretty sure just about everyone in the county visited the fairgrounds last week. If not, you should make plans to attend next year, because if it is anything like the 2001 model, there will be plenty of fun had by all.
